500m boost for north qld nickel refinery Updated Sorry, this video has expired Video: Queensland Nickel refinery worker suspended (7pm TV News Qld) Queensland Nickel has announced that the biggest-ever job cuts will be announced at its Carmichael Refinery in south west Queensland on Friday. The company said workers at the refinery will be placed on a 48-hour indefinite contract. Queensland Nickel said the workers are not under contract for the next 30 days. The announcement came after state Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said her government had called off talks to sell Queensland Nickel's assets. On Monday Labor confirmed it would cancel planned talks with the company over its plans for a $20 billion refinery near Mount Isa. Queensland Nickel said the closure is because it no longer qualifies for Federal funding. Detectives have launched an investigation after one of the victims told police that the alleged driver appeared to be a 17-year-old from Sydney who lived in the area and would often cycle his bike through parts of northern Melbourne, the Southern Cross and Bendigo. The other victim said the youth, who he identified only as "RK" was riding his bike for the purpose of training to become a motorcycle officer but could be used by a rival gang on several occasions. The younger man said he was travelling on the northern side of the city when, on Saturday, he noticed the young man riding "almost exactly on top of his" bike, police said. RK later told police he'd never seen that rider before on public roads and was riding with the driver who appeared to be from Sydney who was "very young," the 22-page incident report said. It also claims RK said he had received numerous calls from the young man "liking" RK's Facebook page and posting "hilarious" photographs of the boy being assaulted by other motorcyclists. Police said they seized more than 300 Facebook messages from people claiming to be "RK" and that several believed the driver, believed to be about 17 or 18, to be a youth from the Sydney area. Police issued a "non-prosecution warning" to RK, but when the young man's parents did not contact him by phone, he agreed not to pursue criminal charges. media_camera A motorcycle is damaged after a bike crash that left one man injured in a fatal crash on Sunday. Picture: Jason Noble The investigation was launched after police obtained a "dispatcher warning" from a "source in the local community" for the incident on Sunday. It is understood that the driver is believed to live in Bendigo, but police would not name the city. The 22-page incident report is a detailed account of a week long blitz by police and public representatives in the region who worked day and night to ensure the youth was caught an
